About Michael’s career

Michael qualified as a doctor at the University of Auckland Medical School and completed his specialist training with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmology in New Zealand.

He then travelled to the UK for fellowships in glaucoma and refractive surgery at the Royal Devon and Exeter Eye Hospital and the prestigious Moorfields Eye Hospital in London.

‍

He has been back in Hamilton for 16 years and is a consultant ophthalmologist at Waikato Hospital, Hamilton Eye Clinic, Bridgewater Day Surgery and Laser Eye Centre.

Michael is very involved with selecting and training junior ophthalmologists. He is an honorary academic lecturer at the University of Auckland Medical School.

Michael sits on the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmology NZ Branch Executive Committee. He is the current New Zealand chair of the RANZCO Qualification and Education Committee. A recent prominent role is the chair of its Selection Board for Australia and New Zealand. Michael is a current board member and previous chair of Ophthalmology New Zealand.

In cataract surgery, he is experienced in using the latest lens technologies to get the best outcome for your vision. In addition to cataracts, Michael does glaucoma surgery and pterygium surgery. He has also performed thousands of refractive surgeries, including Lasik, IOLs and ICLs. Michael continuously strives to find the best solutions for his patients.

Michael enjoys travelling, when possible, to overseas ophthalmology conferences or visiting his three adult children around the world with his wife, Lucinda. When he has the time, Michael is a passionate skier and loves working on their lifestyle block or going to the beach.
