Thiyaga is a consultant ophthalmologist at Hamilton Eye Clinic and Waikato Hospital. He has fellowship training in vitreoretinal surgery, medical retina and uveitis. Thiyaga is a member of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Retinal Specialists and is affiliated with the American and European Society of Retinal Specialists. He is a fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists.
Thiyaga completed his medical degree at the University of Otago in 2010. In 2013, he was awarded the Maurice Paykel Fellowship at the University of Auckland. Thiyaga has been involved in multiple clinical research projects and publications in peer-reviewed journals. He completed his specialist ophthalmology training in Auckland, Rotorua, Hawkes Bay and Hamilton. He then undertook an 18-month vitreoretinal fellowship at Waikato Hospital in 2019 to address retinal and macular disorders, such as retinal detachments, epiretinal membranes and macular holes. Thiyaga also gained experience in complex cataract surgeries.
Following this in 2021, Thiyaga was the professorial fellow at Sydney Eye Hospital and Save Sight Institute. He gained further specialty experience in uveitis and medical retina by working alongside internationally renowned ophthalmology professors. Thiyaga was involved in 20 clinical trials for macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and vascular disorders. He has fellowship experience in neuro-ophthalmology, glaucoma and inherited retinal disorders.
